The Evolution of Bluetooth® NLC – Bluetooth® NLC vs. Zigbee
Zigbee, released in 2004, was suitable for outdated lighting systems for today’s market. Technological shortfalls will lead to sub-optimal performance:
⚠️ Interference with Wi-Fi
⚠️ Developed for low duty-cycle monitoring and control applications (i.e., short bursts of information, not continuous transmission).
⚠️ For commercial lighting applications, wireless controls must co-exist with Wi-Fi without interference.
⚠️ Data rates too slow to support large node networks
⚠️ 2.4GHz radios have data rates fast enough for residential lighting applications and end users.
⚠️ Too slow to reliably mimic wired controls for thousands of nodes in commercial/industrial lighting applications.
🚨 WARNING: Legacy Radios are not suitable for high-performance buildings 🚨
⏺️ Early radios based on ANSI 802.15.4 (i.e., Zigbee) have no or limited support for multi-casting (single source able to send data to multiple recipients simultaneously).
⏺️ Multi-casting is needed to control lights in sync and with no delay.
⏺️ Utilize a router or hub as a network coordinator = single point of failure.
